Accountant 1

Department: Admin
Location: Burlington, VT

Hiring Range: $24 to $27 Hourly, Paid Biweekly


The Staff Accountant is a proficient member of the Property Accounting Team, responsible for accurate and timely completion of accounting tasks for a portfolio of 15 to 25 assigned properties. This individual applies familiarity with GAAP and basic understanding of CHT operations to provide timely and accurate financial statements, audit packets, and tax returns for assigned properties.

Essential Job Duties
  • General ledger: maintain general ledger and produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for a portfolio of CHT Owned properties, tax credit partnerships, condo associations, and co-ops.
  • Review and reconcile property activity between multiple software applications, including month-end processing, problem solving with property managers, and support for reporting.
  • Support Property Management in miscellaneous billing and reporting for partnerships.
  • Post property deposits.
  • Prepare assigned portions of property budgets.
  • Provide basic financial statement analysis of budget to actual variances for assigned properties.
  • Consistently and accurately complete audit and tax packets in a timely manner.
  • Perform assigned tasks in support of corporate accounting activities when assigned.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associates degree in accounting or a related field is required. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a professional environment required, experience working in public or private accounting is strongly preferred;
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered if required skills and knowledge are demonstrated.
  • Experience compiling financial statements according to GAAP is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, financial software, and standard office technology are required. Experience using Sage MIP and/or One Site Accounting are preferred.
  • Must be technologically savvy and capable of working effectively and efficiently in both an office and remote work environment. Remote work is available on a limited basis as part of a flexible schedule option, but may be required during COVID-19 or other emergencies.
  • Commitment to CHT’s membership based model of community controlled and permanently affordable housing.
  • Must have reliable transportation and ability to pass a criminal background check.
Competencies
  • Familiarity with and experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to create accurate financial statements audit packets, and tax returns.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, efficiency, self-motivation, organization, and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with financial software applications, Microsoft Office suite, computer applications and technology.
  • Ability to consistently communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and maintain a positive, collaborative attitude under pressure.
  • Strong commitment to meeting or exceeding deadlines and maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

Physical and Mental Abilities: The Staff Accountant must have the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential job duties listed above. However, reasonable accommodation may be extended to help perform those duties. The job entails long periods of sitting at a desk. There will be prolonged periods of computer work. While performing the essential duties of this job the Staff Accountant will have to use eyes, hands and fingers, walk, stand, reach, or lift up to 15 pounds.
