Accountant I

Department: Admin
Location: Burlington, VT

Hiring Range: $24 to $27 hourly

The Accountant I performs a wide variety of accounting functions in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulations for Champlain Housing Trust’s (CHT's) corporate and property accounting activities. This individual must take a proactive and independent approach to complete assigned duties with exacting accuracy, confidentiality, efficiency, and in adherence with CHT's policies and procedures. The Accountant I will use a positive attitude, strong communication, and people skills to work effectively with coworkers (inside and outside the department) and external stakeholders as needed.

Essential Job Duties

General Accounting

  • Prepare weekly Owned Property Stand Alone transfers.
  • Reconcile weekly Open Payables and Check Register reports.
  • Support Corporate Accountants with transfer activity.
  • Support Corporate and Property Accountants with reconciliations, schedules and audit preparation as assigned.
  • Coordinate with program staff to gather and maintain current vendor insurance, W-9, and other documentation as required.
  • Maintain all financial files including accounts payable, ensuring timely and accurate filing, adhering to appropriate checkout procedures, refiling returned items timely, and transitioning files for each new fiscal year.
  • Periodically review all files on a rotating basis to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper order.

Deposits

  • Prepare all bank deposits for CHT’s corporate operating funds and CHT’s Owned and/or Managed Properties and deliver to appropriate banks daily.
  • Prepare deposits for Laundry Coin and deliver to appropriate bank within 1 business day of receipt.

Accounts Payable

  • Daily collection and entry of AP invoices for all CHT and property activity.
  • Audit invoice coding for errors.
  • Audit invoice entry batches to ensure accuracy.
  • Match checks to supporting invoices after weekly check runs.
  • Obtain signatures on checks as applicable according to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provide support and backup for check run process including assistance with research and response to questions when they arise.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience that will demonstrate the skills required to perform core duties of the position are required.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP principles, ability to perform reconciliations and basic analysis required.
  • Computer and technology skills including intermediate level Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Impeccable attention to detail, accuracy, and organization skills are required.
  • Must have a positive attitude, be proactive, self-motivated, and highly productive.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must.
  • Must be committed to CHT's membership-based model of community controlled and permanently affordable housing.
  • The ability to pass a criminal background check is required.

Physical and Mental abilities: The Accountant I must have the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential job duties listed above. However, reasonable accommodation may be extended to help perform those duties. The job entails long periods of sitting at a desk. There will be prolonged periods of computer work. While performing the essential duties of this job, the Accountant I will have to use eyes, hands and fingers, walk, stand, reach or lift up to 25 pounds.

Work Atmosphere

Champlain Housing Trust is a non-profit, member-based organization. The work entails significant self-motivation. Occasional travel to meetings and seminars may be required.
